Artist Statement
My work carries out my efforts of representing my people, the Meskwaki Tribe, in a way that brings pride to our traditions. Using Meskwaki florals and applique designs I depict the world though a lens that seeks to remind the world that we still exist and are still deeply connected to our beliefs and community values. With my work I am continuing the long practice of Indigenous people’s production of utilitarian art. Creating objects that proudly display indigenous beliefs and identities in the most beautiful of ways within everyday objects. I have come to describe these nuances as the ‘story’ in my piece.

These stories I depicted through my pieces come from my own childhood in my tribe's community and travels throughout “NDN” Country, recognizing what is abundant and what is lacking within Indigenous communities today. Employing the language of colors and images used in indigenous visual art. I build a tale of responsibility, humility, humor, traditional and modern life. The work I create is to remind my viewers of the traditional values in being members of an indigenous community. I aim to inspire and call to action the responsibility that lies dormant in the generations before mine, and to encourage the generations coming after me.
